The Cabbage Roll

There is no denying that these look less than appealing. No one has ever looked at a plate of cabbage rolls and genuinely said "Those cabbage rolls look delicious!" I've have tried to pretty them up but with no success. They are just one of those foods where to look at you don't want to try but to taste you'll be glad you did.

For me cabbage rolls are a comfort food, they're one of the many foods I always remember my nonna (grandma) having ready to eat as soon as we stepped in the door.

It had been a long time since I had them until recently when I was skyping with my family and they were eating some that my nonna had brought over. Very jealous and a little bit hungry, I decided I was going to make some myself!

After making these delicious parcels of goodness, I realised not only are they easy to make but cheap as well. It's no wonder they are a staple in my nonna's kitchen, clever lady!

Here's is what you will need to make them;

1 Head of Cabbage
500g Turkey Mince
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves of garlic, crushed
60g rice
1 egg
700g Passata
Pinch of Salt and Pepper

Preheat your oven to 200.

Start of by placing the head of cabbage in boiling water and boil for about 6 minutes. Drain and then place in a bowl of cold water, this helps separate the leaves.

Combine the mince, onion, garlic, rice, egg, salt and pepper in a bowl. Mix together.

Remove the leaves from the bowl of water and separate from the head. In each leaf place a small handful of the meat mixture (about a 1/4 cup) and roll shut. I usually place the mixture closer to the end of the leaf with the stalk and roll it closed, tucking in the ends. Or you could just use toothpicks to keep them shut.

Place cabbage rolls in a deep rectangular pan and pour passata over top, refill the passata jar about halfway with water and pour this over as well.

Cover with tinfoil and place in the oven for about an hour. Check about halfway through to see if any extra water needs to be added.

What are your favourite comfort foods?

xx
